MFL Year 8 Spanish Cooking Demonstration ( Published: 17/07/2024)
On Tuesday 9th July and Wednesday 10th July, Miss Arribas delivered a Spanish cooking demonstration to 8×3 and 8y3 students as part of their Food Technology lesson with Miss Ahmed. Miss Arribas cooked a Spanish omelette in the way that it would be usually prepared in a real Spanish home.
The session started with vocabulary explanations on the meaning of the word ‘tortilla’ (omelette in Castilian Spanish), and the term ‘totopos’, used in Mexico to refer to what is known in Britain as ‘tortilla chips’. This helped students to improve their Spanish vocabulary skills.
Students watched attentively, and also had the opportunity to help with various cooking tasks like peeling and washing potatoes and whipping eggs. At the end, there was a tasting session for students to compare the taste of a freshly made Spanish omelette to that of a shop-bought one. Students were also able to try the quintessentially Spanish Manchego cheese.
Students wanted to know about the occasions in which Spanish people would normally eat a Spanish omelette. It was explained to them that it was usually a popular ‘tapa’ you get in a bar, as well as the type of food you would take on a picnic or day out. Some of them also asked where you could buy Manchego cheese in the UK.
The experience was very successful with the students, and it also fuelled their interest and curiosity about Hispanic cooking and different culture in general.
