These young people are under the age of 18 and provide care to another family member; this can often impact their emotional, physical and social wellbeing and affect their progress in school. Our Young Carers felt strongly that other pupils in the school did not recognise what a Young Carer was, and did not understand what challenges they might face.
To challenge this, we worked with Media Cubs, a young-persons led production and communications company, to create a short film that would help educate everyone in the school about Young Carers. Not only was it a space for our young people to share their stories, but an opportunity to work together as a group and try new media skills such as camera work, interviewing, and presenting.
Our new video will be used in personal development sessions and assemblies to promote understanding and care:

At The East Manchester Academy, we wanted to raise awareness about young carers and the impact caring responsibilities can have on a child’s wellbeing and academic success. The young carers involved enjoyed learning new skills on how to film professionally and were courageous in sharing their own personal experiences. The video will also be used to help us to identify other young cares at TEMA, so we can generate even more support for them.

It was fantastic to work with such an enthusiastic group of young people. During filming they all really supported one another to help share their stories. We are really proud of their work and they should be too.
